Lag on a Minecraft server: how to check TPS and speed the server up

Updated 25-10-2026

A Minecraft server calculates the game 20 times per second (20 TPS). When it cannot keep up, blocks disappear late, mobs stutter and players get pulled back. Here is how to find the cause of lag and fix it.

Server lag or player lag?

  • Everyone lags at once: the problem is on the server's side (low TPS).
  • One person lags: it is usually their internet (ping) or computer (low FPS).

Check the TPS

On Paper and Purpur type tps in the console. 20 means the server keeps up. Below 18 players start to feel lag.

The Statistics tab shows CPU and RAM charts. A CPU at its maximum all the time together with low TPS means the server has too much work, not too little memory.

Find the culprit: spark

The spark plugin (or mod) shows exactly what takes the server's time. Install it in Add-ons, restart the server and type in the console:

spark profiler start

After a few minutes of lag type spark profiler stop. You get a link to a report showing the plugin, mod or kind of mob behind the lag.

The most common causes

  1. Too large a distance: set view-distance to 8–10 and simulation-distance to 6–8 in Server settings → Server. Players rarely notice, and the server has much less work.
  2. New terrain being generated: players exploring new land put a heavy load on the server. Pre-generate the map with the Chunky plugin (chunky radius 3000, then chunky start) and set a world border, e.g. worldborder set 6000.
  3. Too many mobs and items: huge farms, thousands of items on the ground and animals in pens. Limit the farms and remove mobs you do not need.
  4. Heavy plugins or mods: the spark report shows which. Update it or replace it with a lighter one.
  5. The engine: Paper is much faster than Vanilla. On Fabric add performance mods, e.g. Lithium and FerriteCore.
  6. Missing memory: only when RAM keeps reaching the limit. See How much RAM does a Minecraft server need.

A daily restart

A server running for days without a break slows down over time, especially with mods. Set an automatic nightly restart: Schedules and automatic restart.
