Ranks and permissions on a Minecraft server: LuckPerms
Updated 25-10-2026
LuckPerms is the most popular plugin for ranks and permissions on Minecraft servers. With it you give players access to just the commands they need, instead of handing out OP.
Installation
- Go to Add-ons → Browse and search for LuckPerms.
- Click Install and restart the server.
LuckPerms works as a plugin on Paper and Purpur and as a mod on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. The panel picks the right version itself.
The first rank
Type the commands in the console (without a slash) or in the game as an operator (with a slash):
lp creategroup vip
lp group vip permission set essentials.fly true
lp group vip meta setprefix 10 "&6[VIP] "
lp user Name parent add vipIn order: you create the vip group, give it the EssentialsX fly permission, set a chat prefix and add a player to the group.
- Permissions for everyone go to the
defaultgroup. - A group can inherit from another, e.g.
lp group admin parent add vip. - The prefix shows in the chat when you have a chat plugin, e.g. EssentialsX Chat.
The web editor
Type lp editor. You get a link to a handy rank editor in your browser. After you save the changes, the editor gives you an lp applyedits … command: paste it into the console.
Permission names
Every plugin lists its permissions in its documentation. When you do not know which permission a command needs, type lp verbose on and use the command in the game: LuckPerms shows what the plugin asked for.
Ranks in the panel
In the Players tab open a player's card and go to Ranks. You see the player's ranks and can give a new one or take one away. The server must be running with LuckPerms installed.
Shared ranks on several servers
By default LuckPerms keeps its data in the server's files. If you have several servers and want shared ranks, switch it to a MySQL database: see MySQL database.
